memtest / pstat

Trying to run these to apps to troubleshoot my XP PC.
memtest DLd and installed the iso to my CD drive. Rebooted and
selected boot from CD. Doesn't work. My PC boots up to XP as it always
does. How do I get it to boot and run memtest?
pstat - this runs OK I suppose. I see what appears to be a command line
screen, a lot of text scrolls by but then the screen closes. How do I
access the information displayed?
BONUS - where can I learn to decipher the information I will get when I
successfully run these two?
