That 'you need more virtual memory' message is telling you that there are
too many programs running on your computer for the amount of memory you have
available. Here's what to do about it, in this order:

1. If you have manually adjusted your paging file settings, return to
'system managed size'.
2. Reduce the number of programs running. This includes programs running in
the background.
3. Remove the viruses and spyware from your computer. Viruses and spyware
will often suck up as much memory as they can.

Thanks for your reply, but Im not sure I understand what you are saying..I
guess Im not that computer saavy. how do I return to system managed size ?

Hi Susan,

What's the amount of RAM installed on the system?

Is Windows is not set to manage memory, then do so and see if the
message goes away.

Right clicking on My Computer - Properties - Advanced Tab - Performance
Settings - Advanced Tab - Change, select System managed size then click
Set. Then click Ok - Ok - Ok and let the system reboot.

Click Start
Select Control Panel
Select System
Select Advanced
Select Advanced
Select Change in the "Virtual memory" area
Select "Let system manage the size of the paging file"
Start selecting OK until you exit the control panel
Jim

Control Panel > Sustem > Advanced tab > Performance Settings button >
Advanced tab > Virtual memory Change button > for the C: drive click on
'System managed size'

My system also has 512 MB. I set it to system managed size shortly after it
arrived 2 years ago. It seems that the system has never needed a pagefile,
and it has never told me about low virtual memory

Susan this site as you put it is a news group. You should access it with
outlook express. In OE goto tools menu, accounts, news, add, then news which
will bring up a connection wizard. Type a name keeping it annonymous. Then
click next. Add an email adress but dont put your real one as they will get
harvested. Click next and the server address is msnews.microsoft.com. Click
next and finish. Thats it. OE will ask if you want to download a list of
groups. Say yes and all the groups will be downloaded. Search for windowsxp
and you will see all the xp groups. Subscribe to any you want. If you need
any more help repost and someone will help. Outlook express is a much better
way to access newsgroups than going through google groups or some such.

Okay guys....I changed to s ystem manage size for my RAM and i am still
getting the message that i am low on virtual memory. I have basically
nothing in this computer so I know it isnt possible to have no memory! I
have virus protection and spyware protection in my system..but my question
is, is it possible there is a virus in my computer that my virus scan is not
picking up ? and that is why i have no memory? I am wondiering if I should
just take everything out of my computer and start over again..any thoughts ?

Thanks again : ) Sue

It's absolutely possible for a virus or spyware to get past your detection
software....if the detection software is not setup correctly, if it's not
updated or if you don't exercise adequate caution while on the internet.

I'll cut to the chase and not theorize about what is going on. This is
how you reset your swap file more thoroughly, if it does not fix the
problem I owe you a waffle.

1. Go to the virtual memory settings as others described above through
the control panel.
2. Change the setting to "no page file" instead of managed
3. Reboot
4. Open My Computer. Make sure you have your folder options set so that
you can see hidden or system files. Find this checkbox for this under
Tools>>Folder Options>>View tab inside the scroll box labeled Advanced
Options. You should spot it pretty quickly, it is near the top of the list.
5. Find your hard drive letter and left click it once to look at the
root directory.
6. Find and delete the file named pagefile.sys Windows will probably
yell at you for trying to delete a system file, but go ahead and do it
anyway (with a cackling laugh if you wish).
7. Reboot.
8. Go back to the virtual memory settings again and select "system
managed size".
9. Reboot.

I've never seen this fail to work except when there is a virus or other
particularly nasty spyware present.
