Memory upgrade to 2 Gig

Doing memory upgrade, I moved the 256M module from
slot 0 to slot 1 and put a new 512 M Kingston Tech. in its place.
Slot 2 still has the original second 256 MB and slot 3 is empty.
PC spec states "Comes with two 256M PC2700 or better dual-inline
memory modules, and dual-channel supported only when identical
pairs are used". But Kingston box states Not dual-channel compatable.
Bios shows the change to 1 Gig as does Windows and Hp's PC
Doctor memory test is green. I've noticed that my Task Manager
"commit charge" is up from ~ 110 to 130 M and guess that only
hardware change could be resposible for it.
1) Have I lost whatever advantage Dual channel provides me and
is there anything to do about it (move 256 in slot 2 to slot 3 so it will
be paired with 256 in slot 1)?.
2) Is there anything that needs be done to Windows/Apps., like
reinstall, or is it clever enough to take advantage of change?

Will apprciate someone's expetise on the subject

move the 256 back to slot 0 , leave the other where it was (slot 2?) and put
the 512 in slot 3 ...

you "may" get dual channel back on the 256's depending on your motherboard

RAM can only be added in identical pairs in the appropriate RAM slots to
maintain dual channel capability.

Adding one "odd" RAM module will disable dual channel capability.

The pair slots on your system are 0 and 2, and 1 and 3.

An Award bios with this capability will note if dual channel is enabled or
disabled at the outset when first turning on the PC.

I didn't think it would run both
