DocMemory is a good choice. Registration is required to download the
software, but I've had no problems related to the registration.

The one I trust is memtest86

This includes very thorough tests and runs standalone; you boot clean into
the software. memtest86 has found intermittent memory problems for me in
the past, when running it for long durations (several hours).

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I selected memtest86 and found it
seem to work very well.
