I have four memory slot, 2 in use and 2 empty slots. what does the blue and
black represent? the 2 blue slot have 256mb of memory inserted and 2 black
memory slot is empty does this mean that i can just add two 256mb of memory
to the black empy slots? or does the black memory slot have a different
purpose?

Your Motherboard most likely supports dual channel memory, to take advantage
of this feature you should use matched pairs of memory.
The first matched pair go in slot 1 and 3, the second pair uses slots 2 and
4. The slot closest to the CPU is usually slot 1 and slot 3 will have the
same color as slot 1. Slots 2 and 4 will be the other color.

First I would download a copy of Memtest86 and make a quick test (4 hours)
of your system as is.
Memtest86 dowload: http://www.memtest86.com/
If it passes all test and reports that memory is running in dual channel
mode then order the two (as a matched pair) 512MB sticks.
Then insert the 512MB sticks in the two remaining black slots (this should
give you a total of 1.5MB) and run memtest again for 8 hours.
If it passes all tests and reports memory is in dual channel mode your home
free with 1.5GB of memory.
If the test fails, then remove the two 256MB sticks and move the two new
512MB sticks to the blue slots and run memtest again.
If it passes this time and it should, you will have at least 1GB of memory.

Also as Mac said in an earlier post to your question, check what you
motherboard supports (User's Manual), identify the motherboard manufacture
or PC Manufacture/Model if you can and/or see the Crucial site as Mac
suggested.

Don't rush and get the wrong type of ram, remember 'It's your money and you
only get to spend it once'.
