1GB memory setup?

I just got a 1GB dual channel kit (2X512mb). My computer originally came with
2x256mb on slot 1, 3 with 2, 4 empty. what should i do?

Should i remove my existing 256mb memory on 1, 3 slot and replace it with
the new dual channel kit memory or can i just put the new memory on the empty
2, 4 slot. If i put the new dual channel memory on the emply slot 2, 4 does
this mean it's running on single channel.

that depends on if the memory in the system already is running dual channel,
if it is adding the 2x512mb sticks into slot 2 and 4 will still enable the
system to run at dual channel (my system as is has 2x512's in 1,3 and 2x1gb
in 2,4 and runs dual channeled).
If the memory isn't dual channeled then you would have to drop the 2x256mb
sticks out and replace it with the 1gb dual channel kit. From what I know
if you have a mix of dual channel and non-dual channel it will run at single
channel, though I've never tested this configuration, i've always run at
dual in any setup...

Dual channel is often configured 1, 3 and 2, 4.

If the specs on the new stuff is close enough to the old you can just
add it. Some boards will insist on the new stuff being in 1, 3 and
the old in 2, 4. If the specs on the new stuff isn't close enough to
the old you'll have to remove the old stuff entirely.

"Close enough" depends on your board.

thanks EvilNem, I had to make some changes and had to put back the 2x256MB
PC2700 Dual channel memory on socket 1, 3 and just added the 2x512MB PC2700
dual channel kit on socket 2,4. This memory setup seem to be running on dual
channel mode because CPU-Z 1.37 software is displaying that my setup is in
dual channel.
