memory SIMMS on hp 6mp

news.rcn.com

When I started getting a plethora of error messages on my formerly-trusty
5mp I have had for a decade or so which had , I tried replacing it with a
6mp I have
lying around. (not really sure what the differences are?)

I took all memory out of the 5 and put it into the 6 just in case. On
plugging in the 6, all lights went on. no pressing buttons by the lights
would make any difference or give me any secondary error code. But I then
turned it off and now it simply wont turn on again. When plugged into any
socket. not until I took the memory from the 5mp out. Then neither memory
chip would work in the 6.

The memory SEEMS to be an ordinary SIMM, I presumed with those jumpered
leads from 69 to 72? Is there some difference or do the jumpers not need to
be there? Am I therefore replacing one printer with a virtually identical
printer with less memory?

The simms are the same in both models so they should be interchangeable.
Did you install them one at a time to see whether one of the slots in the 6MP
formatter is faulty? You might play around by trying one slot and then another,
I think (???) you can put simms in any slot.
If I recall correctly, all lights on is not a valid error code. A fatal error
is the top 4 lights on and the bottom one off.
If the simms work in the 5MP but not in the 6MP and are correctly installed
then I suspect the formatter has failed in the 6MP, unfortunately it is
different to the 5MP formatter.
You could try a cold reset followed by a NVRAM initialisation.
1. Power printer off then on, hold down the reset button for 5-10 seconds.
2. Power off then on, hold down the reset button for more than 20 seconds.
If that does not help, the formatter is probably faulty.

Just so you don't get stuck where I did when I added memory to my 6mp: with
extra memory it takes a lot longer to be ready. When I turn mine on now, I
get motor noise, then all six lights stay on for about 20 seconds. Only
then does it goes through the normal self-test cycling of the lights. The
first time it did this I was sure it was bad memory. So make sure you are
giving it enough time.

If you get the 6MP working, I need some "cosmetic" parts off a "5"...
and I likely have plenty of memory that I could trade you if you do
have a compatibility problem, or I might buy some parts outright if
the price is right - so drop me a line by email if you are interested.
Maybe we can figure something out that works for both of us.

FYI -although I'd think that they would both use the "same" memory,
there were a lot of subtle variations in 72pin memory - it might be a
compatibility issue. What I have might work in your 6MP, but it might
not. It would be a shot in the dark.
