Memory Question..

Dumb question... I have an HP a1310n desktop with 4 memory slots - all
white. This board is supposed to support dual channel - oddly the sockets
are not color coded in pairs...

I'm new to 'dual channel' in terms of memory... it was on the memory stick I
just bought...

What does this mean in terms of my motherboard? According to the HP web
site, the motherboard is an ASUS model A8AE-LE. The HP/Compaq name is
AmberineM-GL6E. The chipsets are RS482 Northbridge and SB400 Southbridge.
I would assume that these are AMD's own chipsets.

Anyway, the chipset has a Dual-channel memory architecture with 4 x 184-pin
DDR DIMM sockets support unbuffered non-ECC 4 GB 400/300 MHZ DDR memory
modules.

My question:

I have a 1 gig stick in slot 1, and a 512 in slot 2, and a 512 in slot 3,
slot 4 is empty... (actually slot 0-3) - I have no intentions of adding any
more.

Is this an optimum way of installing them - largest in the first Slot?

Thank you!

I don't think I've seen any machines where it made any difference...
If all is working fine now...I'd just leave it

Thank you.. I seem to remember that years ago that it's best to install the
largest stick in the first slot....
Now with Dual Channel, I am not so sure... thanks again!

Me, I started with CP/M machine then 8087, skipped 286, 386, 486 and up
and up to where I am lost <bg>. My first memory set was set of 9 (when I
started building my own system), then a set of 2, then a much larger in
single stick. The only thing I need to remember is to start from lowest
bank (BANK0 ->3 or 4). That was all I needed to remember.

Then one of the 4 desktops we have now (and several notebooks <g>) has
different requirement or limitation.

- It supports *both Single-Side and Double-Side memory, but has limited to
3-sides maximum. Example

- (3) 1x1GB = 3GB if using 3 Single-Side

- (1) 2x512M + (1) 1x1GB = 2GB max if mix with Double-Side stick

- (1) 2x1GB + (1) 1x1GB = 3GB if one is 2GB stick
