memory performance as measured by memtest86

I have an older system that seems sluggish a lot of times.

memtest86 reports the speed of the caches and main memory in MB/sec.

About how much of memory throughput in MB/sec should I expect with the
following setup:

* AMD Athlon XP 1833 MHz 2500+ Barton
* Soyo KT600 motherboard, supports up to PC3200, not capable of dual channel
* 1 stick 1 GB PC2700

I wonder if I can speed it up by changing the timings in the BIOS, but I
am not interested in overclocking---I just want to do it by the book.

In single channel mode, at DDR400 (PC3200), my old Nforce2 based
board would get 916MB/sec. Note that that is 916/3200 or about 29%
of the theoretical maximum (efficiency is never 100%). Since you're
running at PC2700, the number should be less. My RAM was running at
CAS2 at the time, and that will make a small difference as well.
(A lower CAS means slightly more transactions per second).

A guy here gets 752MB/sec while using PC2700. So you might be in that
kind of ballpark.

If your machine is running strangely slow, check your chipset, if your
using a via chipset its likely cause a bottle neck.

While in Windows, why not use CPUZ to review your hardware settings ?
Maybe you'll notice something abnormal that way.

Also, if you have further questions, please mention in the posting,
how many sticks of RAM you're using, their speed rating and so on.
And what processor you are using. To give a more complete picture
of the system in question. And mentioning the memtest86+ bandwidth
number you got, wouldn't hurt either.
