Memory in question

I just upgraded my ststem to 512MB. When I look at the
system properties General tab it is showing that I have
523,344 KB. My BIOS shows the 512, why would there be this
discrepancy? Thank you

1 k = 1024
1m = 1024 k
1 g = 1024 m
and so on.
