Memory EMS and XMS

I recently reinstalled windows xp home edition and ever
since, my computer won't run any applications through
dos. I have many games that tell me my computer won't
support certain resolutions and others won't tell me
anything. But I recently ran a game, and the game
said, "There wasn't found enough EMS-Memory nor enough
XMS-Memory The game needs 4096 kb Memory." I have the
latest drivers for my video card (ATI Radeon 9800) and
I'm not sure if it's talking about ram (512 MB). Before I
reinstalled Windows, everthing worked great. Please Help!
