memory corruption error in XP home

W

wba

In a previous life (perhaps using XP pro, I no longer have access to that
computer) a memory access fault gave a popup that said something like "memory
access error at location ABCDEF, the memory location could not be 'read'".
When I get a memory fault now, it sends some kind of report to Microsoft. I
don't think Microsoft wants to debug my programs. Is there some registry
setting I can set that gets the old behavior?

Assuming that in "this life" you're using Windows XP ...

Open System Properties (e.g., right click My Computer, select
Properties), click "Advanced" tab, click "Error Reporting" button, and
choose the option you prefer.

Are you a programmer? If so, and these are the programs you wrote?

If you are not a programmer, I'm thinking you have some bad memory.

You can turn off error reporting as indicated, but I think that still
leaves you with the problem, huh?

It is more logical to fix the problem and not the annoying symptom of
the problem.

Personally, I would rather know when a program is pooping out, figure
out why and fix it.

If you want to try to fix the problem, provide more details:

XP Version & Service Pack
The offending program if it is revealed in the message
The complete error message
When do you most often see this message

A good malware scan never hurt anybody:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

Sure they can! For example they can remove Aston as your shell as it
thinks it is malware, which it isn't. If that isn't bad enough, it
doesn't plug Explorer back in as the shell. Thus when you reboot, you
have nothing but a blank screen and a pointer and nothing more.

It isn't just Ad-Aware (even the most recent versions) that does this,
but other ones can too. So yes, a good malware scan *can* make your
system unusable under some conditions.
