Memo Field Truncated in Access 97 query

Access 2000 has a work around for use of a memo field by placing 'First' in
the total row of the query and changing source in report.

This does not seem to work in Access 97. Is there any way to do this in 97
so that memo fields can be seen entirely in queries and displayed on reports?

Odd, since that's where I learned to use this very technique. It works
fine for me!
