Media movie Preview causes explorer to crash

When I click on a mpeg2 video in windows explorer, the
movie appears in the preview box, but then the explorer
window freezes. I have opened these files using windows
media player (version 7, I now have 9, the videos stopped
working before I upgraded) previously, and there seems no
obvious change in the system at the time the problem
started. The files will still play within windows media
player, but the first 30 secs of video fly by within ~5
seconds, and the sound is over 40 seconds off. I have
noticed that the codec used is the RAVISENT video and
audio codecs. If I could get the movies to play within
media player, it would be great, but the primary concern
is to keep windows from crashing when i select a single
file (without disabling the preview bar).

How can I resolve this issue?

Check you settings in Media player. TOOLS then OPTIONS and
see if the "connect to internet" is checked off. As well
check in the security tab and check to see if it is
connecting to update licenses and the such.
