Have a desktop with XP and a laptop with ME. Want to be
able to see the laptop so that I can transfer files onto
the desktop. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You might try using Netbeui as the protocol between the
two machines. To put netbeui on the XP machine you have
to copy some files off your installation CD. Microsoft's
site has instructions on how to do this.

You must enable file and printer sharing on each machine and set up shared
folders on each machine before you'll get either machine to "see" the other.

You don't need Netbeiui to do this. My understanding is that Netbeiui is
for connectivity to Novell networks.

No - IPX/SPX is for Novell. But NetBEUI isn't needed either - TCP/IP alone
should suffice. Keep things simple!
