.mdb.Ink_backup

Since converting databases to 2002 (XP) from 97 we are getting lots of backup
files with .mdb.Ink_backup as an extension or original database name with
_backup added to it. Any of these backup files cannot be opened. I cannot
repair and compact I get a "The Jet database engine could not find MSysdb
error."

The good news is that the original database is okay.

Can anyone tell me how or why these backup files are created?

Thanks!

Maybe your Access 97 has an unusual Active-X control (that may or may not be
still used) or the original file is corrupted.

Try reimporting all things into a clean new 2002 database file.

The .lnk extension suggests that these are backups of a Windows
"shortcut" file, which has a .lnk extension, rather than your database
itself. Are you perhaps copying the icon on the desktop? If so, that
is NOT the database, just a pointer to the database.

Check your permissions on the folder containing the database; you
should have full - create, edit, delete - privileges.

Well, that is interesting, but these are awfully large files for shortcuts.

I was actually trying to locate the real database for one of our users and
found all these backups with extensions I had not seen before. I could
understand the user's confusion with the backups having more current dates
than the original.

Thanks!
