McAfee VSO Won't Autoupdate

I'm using McAfee VSO version 9 on an XP box. It no longer wants to
autoupdate the dat files, even though set to do so.

If I open the XP Task Scheduler, and manually try to run the update task,
it won't run, and the status is Could Not Start. The path and syntax
appear ok.

I've searched the Microsoft knowledgebase, and asked on the McAfee forum,
but I can't find a resolution.

Has anyone else had this problem and solved it?

TIA

Do you have a firewall, or connect via a proxy server? Have you
installed sp2? Any or all of these can stop the auto-updates.

Good questions. I forgot to state that I'm running SP1 (not SP2, yet?),
and have the XP firewall on. I'm not behind a router, and I don't have
any pop-up blockers. I've got a pretty vanilla set up, that used to
automatically update, until McAfee upgraded from version 8 to version 9 a
month or so ago.

I used to have this problem with version 8, but less frequently. Now,
with version 9, it's permanent.

Others on the McAfee forum report the same problem.

I have version 9 installed on another XP box, and it runs fine. I've
compared settings, and they seem identical.

Ah ha!

Ah ha again.

There is something different on the XP boxen, some combination of
something that makes McAfee barf. If you don't get any answers from
McAfee, you could try:

http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft

as a (I think) better alternative.

Good luck,

Malke

I have my-etrust (sans the firewall) running on a Win98SE box. I got it
with the Security CD from Microsoft. It dependably updates and performs
scheduled scans, but I don't know how effective it is, either in real-
time or demand mode. I'll continue to use it, as this particular box
isn't too important, and it's not open to my network.

Too bad, because I think McAfee is a great scan engine.

When you downloaded vs9 it never updated since is that correct?

Have you followed the uninstall (manual) docs on the www.mcafeehelp.com
site?

Sometimes internet temp files and cookies can mess things up did so for me
and vs8 back 2 mths and a clean up of temp files uninstall long way and
reinstall fixed the issue. I did feel the temp file issue was the cause but
had already uninstalled when i remembered that way.

Did you post on the vs9 forum our tech is interested in helping you if you
still available to try
Peace

Cleared cookies and temp files

Yep, last week. Other than users replying that they have the same problem
since VSO9, there have been no solutions. Time and time again, I see this
problem all over the McAfee forum, but never a solution.
