McAfee Virusscan 9: automatic system reboot after DAT-Update

A

Hi,

scince last update of my McAfee Virusscan 9 home I have a following
problem: my computer reboots itself after constant time (ca. 10
minutes). I can have no other software except standard driver and
mcafee software started, or i can work with some software - it's the
same problem.
If I deactivate all running McAfee software, computer works correct for
a long time. If i let one of McAfee componens running, computer reboots
after 10 minutes.

I tried to contact McAfee support in their online-chat:
one time i should wait for a mail with instructions - nothing happens
since two days and all my next contact attempts were unsuccessful.

Does anybody have an idea, how i can get this software to run properly
again?

Thanks in advance.

My configuration:
Windows 98 SE with all last security updates
McAfee Security Suite 7 with only these components:
VirusScan 9.1, Build 9.1.08, Engine 4.4.00, DAT-Version 4.0.4566
Personal Firewall Build 6.1.6144

Dump the bloated McAfee!
Don't even think about Norton. The Titanic of the super bloated
applications.

Get a good anti virus appliation like AVG or Avast.

Have you tried reverting McAfee back to a previous DAT revision ?

BTW: The latest DAT revision is v4568. That is from the daily DAT that is provided to the
engterprise software. I don't believe the retail version gets daily updates yet and still
only gets updates on Wednesday.

It may be possible to manually install the v4568 DAT files on the system to fix the problem
instead of reverting back to a previous DAT revision. This would be done by downloading the
below ZIP file, disabling McAfee VirusScan, and extracting the files to the McAfee ENGINE
folder.

ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/datfiles/english/dat-4568.zip

The ENGINE folder can be found by doing a search for SCAN.DAT in; C:\Program Files\Common
Files

Hi Dave,

Is there a possibility to do it?

Yes, it is so. I hope, newer Version (VirusScan 10 resp. 2006) do it
daily.

I did it and it seems to work. :)
I have just copy scan.dat, names.dat and clean.dat over existing files
(after backup them)

Thank you for a hint!

Alex
