Mcafee / Norton/ or Windows Live Care

Need some advice. Like most i started with Win/xp quite awhile ago. Found
that Webroots 'Spysweeper' helped with malware, and ended up with McAffee
Control Center/Virus Protection suite. No question my PC was protected.
However it took a lot longer to start up, I was plagued with daily updated
messages for both packages, and although McAfee did catch EVERY potential
change to the registry, start programs, etc, the alerts were not easy to
customize.

Tried One Care at Beta Six months ago, and at least then found it lacking.

So Vista or Window/xp+superdupper is now installed. Appears that Defender
comes with it.

For virus protection, what now makes the most sense.

At this point, better performce, especially time to boot and time to
shutdown are almost more important than the effectiveness of the virus
removal.

thanks,

P.S.

Sorry for the synicism above, all i have been hearing about for a year is
Windows Vista, even in the mainstream press. I purchased Ultimate Upgrade
for i think $250+, and found Windows/xp, yes the interface is cleaner, i am
sure that great things will come from restructing the Kernel for security.
And the Ergonomics department is doing a great job. Underneath however, it
looks a whole lot like Windows/xp, even down to the registry. I will say the
idea of one system image for the product was good, and the updating process
appears to be much, much better.
But Yeah, time to short Microsoft stock (still love the company), and buy
some of the Steve Jobs shares (although probably not at his option prices).
Amazing, and sorry to diverge, Xerox did the heavy lifting on the Mouse, the
Menus and the GUI 30-40 years ago. Xerox wanted to sell the division so badly
(it did not copy paper) that they invited Jobs and Gates in and 30 years
later both have arrived at a very similar product. And Gates, who worked so
hard to make the product open, and develop an ecosystem, then and now is
stealing every major piece not originally taken by Micrsoft. And Jobs pushes
the product design to the max, understanding how the product will be used,
and says take my IPOD, and everyting that goes with it, or take nothing. I
think that also includes his partners...that is the take nothing. Bottom line
both of the guys are have changed how we live, ....geniouses.

You may want to change your thinking and go with NOD32. It's a very good AV
software, is Vista compatible, uses little resources to run, and will not
bog down your system.

I use Spy Sweeper, Spyware Blaster, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy,
Avast antivirus and Windows Defender (with the real time monitoring turned
off).

That's a bit OTT. I just AV, a HOSTS file and disable Windows Defender,
with the very occasional Ewido online scan. It never finds anything, but it
is very good at finding anything if you have some infection.

Do you know the apps?

Spyware Blaster, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and Windows Defender
(with the real time monitoring turned off) run at MY leisure. If I don't run
them, they are doing nothing and not using any resources.

But, if something should get through (not likely) I already have them in
place to perform a system scan.

I have used all those apps, except Spyware Blaster, in the past. I started
using them around 2002, when I got some weird IE toolbar crap. But after a
few months of using them I had changed the way I did things and always ran
in a user account. Updating my HOSTS file also did a lot, as I never got
any spyware again. I didn't even bother running any AV software for a long
while, but with p2p software it is a bit too risky.

SpywareBlaster is very good and, other than updating definitions, requires
no technical knowledge in use..
