Maxtor Hard drive - not recognised

Have just tried to install one touch Maxtor external hard
drive. After fighting with computer for a while, I can
identify the drive in 'computer management' and 'device
manager' but it is not registering under'my computer' so I
can't drag and drop files into new drive.
The 'file system' is not listed in 'computer management'
so I try to format new drive but error occurs and computer
tells me need to restart to fix... but that does nothing.
When computer restarts the external drive light flashes
suggesting it is ok, and when I push the button to back up
I can do that also.... but drag and drop function is still
not working.

Have tried Maxtor but no response yet....

Any suggestions?

Thanks
..

Hi!
Download and install MaxBlast 3 For Windows from
http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/files/maxblast3win.exe

You will be able to format your external drive from Windows XP.
I just formatted mine this way (Windows XP could not manage to format
it).
My external drive is not a "one touch" drive but it is a Maxtor hard
drive.
It should also work for you.

Is that new drive? or used?
If new drive, did you follow instructions?
you need install software first.
Setp one install software from cd which came with drive.
Setp two connect drive to your PC
you just need follow instruction of cd.
(If your PC enable autorun simply insert cd then it will star)
If you did't do that, do all over again.
don't forget you need administrator priviledge for software installation.

also do you have any other device on your USB port?

Straight out of box, followed the instructions to a tee.

Only problem was it did not auto run, I had to manually
run it to install drivers.

I have other USB devices, but have unplugged all of them
and reinstalled software... no luck.

I think your Maxtor are defected.
If i'm in you situation I ask supplier or maxtor to explain what happen,
and ask them to test and exchange that drive.
(or just ask them to exchange drive)
