I have installed a Maxtor external hard drive and now I get , upon launching,
the www.dell.com window (which I use to by pass), then the XP Window screen
with the moving balls, then a looooooong "Windows is starting up" screen,
then the sign in screen which now tells me how many AOL emails I have (
that's new and the number is always incorrect) then I log in. What did I do?
I suppose this computer is searching for it's base and taking it's time but
how to solve this problem of "wasted time"? I use to just go to the sign in
screen after the Windows XP moving balls screen..

If your BIOS is set for Legacy USB support, then BIOS is trying
to initialize the external Maxtor before XP completes it's boot. Did
you install the software that came with the Maxtor. They usually
provide a 1-Button backup package. If you did install ,it could be
that software starting in the background that is responsible for the
extended boot time. Also, if the Maxtor software uses the MS.net
it can change/modify the login process. Hard to give you a clear
cut answer without more system details.

Yes I installed the Maxtor Software though I have to call them about certain other issues so I guess I'll just add this to the pot. But I have no idea what BIOS and Legacy USB support is....it is installed using a USB port that I know.

Legacy USB support is needed if you have a USB mouse and/or keyboard, and
using msdos. As simple as I can put it, you see the bios at work when you
first turn on the computer. It counts the RAM at the very beginning on a
cold boot. The bios sequence is very quick. Some bios may note a key to
push to enter its setup. After the bios has done its work, XP loads.

Well now I know what Legacy USB is and yes I have both mouse and keyboard via USB. I'm just begiining to look at Task Manager which is sort of fun as everything uses and discards RAM I guess and yes Maxtor is the problem upon booting as I unpluged it and the boot is back to where it was. Thanks for your help and for your explanantions though I'd still like to confgure this so MSDOS or Windows (?) doesn't always see Maxtor as a new piece of hardware.
