Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 failure

I

Iain Hallam

Hi.

I've got a 40GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 (6E040L0510214), and although
I've tried it on different PSU cables and IDE connections (including
those known to work with other drives), it never spins up or gets
reported in the BIOS. I assume I've managed to damage something in the
electronics, but I can't see any problems. There is minor scratching on
the flexible silver seal beneath the drive (in a depression I'm assuming
is a screw indentation), but otherwise it all appears fine.

Would it be possible to get a new set of electronics for this drive? Is
there a better way of checking and repairing the thing?

Thanks,

Iain Hallam.

Uhh.... first, has this hard drive *ever* worked for you?

Yes - I moved a 10GB partition to it and stored some backups on it as
well ( The backups are, well, redundant, since I've made new ones. The
partition, though, still contains useful data.
