Maxtor 6Y160M0 vs L01M160

I have read many good reviews of the Maxtor 160GB hard drive
(6Y160M0). At pricegrabber.com, I found it for $123 which seems a
great price for such a good HD.

However, I have also come across another Maxtor 160GB hard drive
(L01M160). On pricegrabber, the lowest price for it is $153.

There seems to be a many positive reviews on the 6Y160MO but
relatively little on the L01M160. It is not clear why I should pay an
extra $30 to get the L01M160 as I cannot find any performance or
feature advantage of L01M160. On Maxtor's own website, there is no
mention of L01M160 but this HD clearly exists.

Can anyone explain if there is any reason why I should pay an extra
$30 to get L01M160 instead of the 6Y160M0???

Thanks.

The model number L01M160 doesn't use Maxtor's pattern for model numbers.

BTW, NewEgg has the 6Y160MO drive for $121 with free FedEx Super Saver
shipping:

and ZipZoomFly has it for $122 with free UPS 2nd Day shipping:

Okay after further digging, I was able to find both models on the
Maxtor Site.
6Y160MO is shown under:
http://www.maxtor.com/en/documentation/data_sheets/diamondmax_plus_9_data_sheet.pdf

L01M160 is shown under:
http://www.maxtor.com/en/documentation/data_sheets/ultra_sata_data_sheet.pdf

However, it is still not clear why I should pay $30 more for L01M160
based on reading these data sheets. It seems one major difference is
that 6Y160M0 is for PC only while L01M160 is PC & Mac but since I
don't own a Mac, this feature is moot.

Hi,

As far as I can work out, the 6Y160MO is a bare drive when you purchase it,
and the L01M160 is the same/similar drive in a retail boxed upgrade kit
including a SATA data cable, Maxtor Maxblast Utilities, screws and
installation documentation.

It could be a retail model vs. an OEM. You'd get a warranty from Maxtor
instead of the store you purchase from, plus some cables and a floppy or cd
containing Maxtor software for formatting the drive, partitioning the
drive, and whatever else.

It doesn't say this explicitly but it would appear that this might be
the case. I've noticed that all stores that sell the 6Y160MO lists it
as "bare drive" or OEM.

But if I am missing the software for fomatting and partitioning the
drive, how would I accomplish this? Would I be able to do this using
Windows XP Pro or would I need to somehow download it from Maxtor?

Thanks again.
