Maximum temperature for an Athlon XP 64 ?

P

Peter Smirnov

I would like to verify if my CPU-fan/cooler is not able to cool down my AMP CPU Athlon XP 64 3500+ Venice core.
Maybe the temperature sensors are defect.

However what is the maximum temperature at which an Athlon XP 64 CPU can operate reliable ?

I'd worry about anything over 65C

I've never seen AMD put XP and 64 together in any processor name, but
anyway, go to this page and click the 'View Details' for your processor.

Max temp is about 90 degrees Celcium. My experience with the Venice core (I've
build several PC's with the XP64 3000+) is that the core temp will not go above
30-35 degrees C (in idle situation) with a boxed cooler with fan not running
(C&Q activated).

You can get the data from AMD's website:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/30430.pdf

Looks like you're safe until you get to the 65C mark... processor
maxes out at 70C.

And temperature sensors VARY greatly and the data isn't absolute
(standard), so the interpretation of that data could be inaccurate as
well.

I think the upper limit of all processors is 90C, these days. But you
should start getting alarmed if you reach 70C. Below 70C, it's only
concerning, and below 60C don't even look at it.

The temperature is not a reliable indicator of power usage. A heat
spreader on the chip packaging will make the average temperature look
much lower than a chip that is packaged bare on the substrate to touch
the heat sink directly. That's because it's transferring its heat over a
smaller contact area than a chip which is using a heat spreader.

Depends on the model/speed,etc...

After doing a little Google search on AMD's site using the site search
ability ie XXXX site://amd.com I came up with the following
information.

http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cach...+temp+site://amd.com&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us

Since you did not state exactly what core your using, I refer you to
the specific sections relating to your particular CPU.
