What is the maximum count of files in a single directory in windows 2000
server?

There is no limit for subdirectories but you will find that
performance on NTFS partitions deteriorates sharply
for directories with more than 5000 entries.

I have noticed ;-)

I have one folder with is used for archiving purposes. It contains now 86
000 files. This is approximately 1/3 of the final figure. So before I'm able
to archive these files to a DVD this folder will contain about 260 000
files.

Think the server can handle this???

I would spread the files into different subfolders prior to
archiving them. 260,000 sounds like a ridiculous figure.

Yes it sounds bit crazy.
Only problem is that there is a application using this folder for document
archiving purposes. The application cannot use subfolders to search for
archived files...
