"Maximize" is hiding the taskbar

In Windows XP, I would work a lot with maximized windows. They would
cover the entire screen except for the taskbar at the bottom of the
screen. Now, having reformatted my hard drive and reinstalling
Windows XP Home, I'm finding the maximized windows are covering the
ENTIRE screen including the taskbar. This is somewhat annoying...I
can't invoke another task without minimizing the current window.

Is this part of the WinXP improvements, or is it something that I can
connfigure back to what I want, if only I knew how?

Thanks in advance for any help you might give.

Right click the Taskbar, select Properties. Check Keep the taskbar on top of other windows.

Right click taskbar - properties - tick always keep the taskbar on top.
