Hi,

I have a new high spec PC running XP Home. I'm trying to find out if my 120g
HDD is running at optimum read/write performance.

Any ideas?

If maximum R/W STR mattered, you would have purchased a real OS
instead of XP, and you would have purchased a RAIDset of SCSI HDs
instead of that commodity PATA HD. <g>

But, to find out what you have, download HDtach and compare its
results with the HD vendor's specs. The new HDtach (v3) supports
NTFS HDs under XP and will report access (or seek) times and read
STR; if read STR is OK, you can pretty safely assume that write STR
will also be OK.
