Max Value in a subform

I have a form which allows a user to add new items to a shipment in a
subform. I need to number each line from 1 - N for each individual shipment.
The item table is displayed in a subform, after a shipment is located. Each
record added should get a new shipment line item number.

The question is, how do I find the max value already existing for that
shipment, increment by one, and set that value into the lineitem control?
