Max Users in local SAM

Don Jones

Is there a limit to the number of users that can be stored
in the Local SAM database? Currently running Windows 2000
Server w/ Terminal Services installed, running in
application mode, and Citrix Metaframe XPe. We have
several hundred users. On occassion, certain services
seem to hang or stop. Restarting the service usually
clears up the problem until the next time.

Read some articles that impiled that large number of users
in the local SAM could cause a problem, but it's not a
problem if the users are in a domain. Sounded kinda of
stange.

Sounds more like a memory leak than anything else. Make sure your printer
drivers (they are notorious on TS/Citrix) are not causing memory leak in
spoolss.exe.

Dear Don,

Thank you for your post.

Yes, there is a limit on the Security Accounts Manager (SAM) database, but
I think that serveral hundred is not a very large number. Please refer to
the following Knowledge Base article:

130914 Number of Users and Groups Affects SAM Size of Domain
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=130914

(Note: It is for Windows NT but can be referenced for Windows 2000 systems.)

So I suspect that the problem may be not directly caused by the SAM
database size. Could you let me know more information about this problem?
For example:

1. When did you first encounter the issue?

2. What services are affected?

3. When the problem occurs, please open Task Manager, browse to the
Processes tab and check the CPU and Mem Usage. Let me know the results.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

Regards,
Joe Wu
