4GB it is the maximum amount of RAM that XP can support-provided your
motherboard supports this much.

It will use the 2 Gb, but only if you're running something that requires
that much. Most people don't need that much.

Your friend is completely wrong. For Windows XP, the correct
number is 4GB
Thats an entirely different question. Even though Windows XP can
use more than 2GB, for the great majority of people, increasing
RAM from 1.5 to 2GB will make *no* difference.
How much memory you need depends on what apps you run, but almost
everyone needs at least 256MB for decent performance. For some
people, for example those who edit large photographic images,
more than 256MB--even much more--can be required for good
performance.
If you are currently using the page file significantly, more
memory will decrease or eliminate that usage, and improve your
performance. If you are not using the page file significantly,
more memory will do nothing for you.
Go to http://billsway.com/notes_public/winxp_tweaks/ and
download WinXP-2K_Pagefile.zip and monitor your pagefile usage.
That should give you a good idea of whether more memory can help,
and if so, how much more.

He is wrong. You can have up to 4GB if the motherboard will handle it.
Any application memory space is limited to 2GB so 3 would probably be a
sensible out and out max. And there are few applications that actually
need anything like that much space anyway. Despite what is said, you
*can* have too much if the result is that RAM sits around with nothing
to do
