Mata information

I have a site that I'm working on that requires meta inforamation for
the search engines. I'm not sure what the best approach is while
using Master Pages. I'm open to advise. If advise means
referal...please add the URL.

Thanks

Is this the right group? Shoot...I know I haven't out grown you
guys. This is the second post that I haven't gotten a response on.

This is one of those questions that you already know the answer to.

It all depends on your situation.

If you want all the pages to have the same meta information, then put the
information inside the master page. It will be outside of the
ContentPlaceHolder in the head (but your meta tags will still be in the
head).

If however, each page has its own specific meta information, then you need
to stick this inside the the Content tag inside your page, the content tag
being the one that relates to the head section of your master page.

When the page is generated, it will all be in the head area.

You need to experiment to find the solution.

Thanks Dave! This raises another question though. Our server sits
behind a firewall. Placing the tags as you've indicated in your post,
will the firewall be a problem? I have ordered a book on Search
Engine Optimization. Judging by the table of contents it should go
over a lot of this.

I think you are getting a little confused...

The firewall should have absolutely no effect. All a web server does is send
a stream of text out on port 80 when called. If the firewall is proxying
(unlikely) then it has no reason to touch it.

Why not just set up a sample page and view it, then view the rendered
source? This will be exactly what a search engine will see.

As a side note, google makes very little use of the meta tags. It will use
them, but it appears to not make any difference in placements.

Sorry...my question was out of ignorance. I'm still unclear as to how
the meta tags make it to a search engine. I have a lot to learn in
this area.

From what I know about Google, Ranking is by how many other pages
reference yours. The more references...the higher the ranking. I
could be wrong. That's what I've read though.

Yep, that is about it, but not just it.

SEO is a big area. There are many aspects in your page that you can modify
to help. The title is one of the major ones. However, you are likely to be
fighting millions of other pages for top spot. Not easy and it is not an
overnight process. It will take a LOOOOOONG time and lots of
experimentation.

Make notes of changes, see what happens.
