Master/sub document header issues

Walipala

I've split several documents into master/sub documents (as a custome
requirement). I was wonding if anyone can help me with this littl
problem:

I cannot update the sub docs' header information---doc version number
release date---from the master document. While all sub docs are opene
in the master, the headers in all sections appear correct. However
when I open the sub docs by themselves they show different, outdate
information. I've been having to change the headers in each sub do
separately, which is getting old.

I've tried unlocking all the sub docs in outline view prior to editin
their headers, as well as making sure all section headers are "same a
previous", but that did not work. Why is it I can easily an
perminently edit regular page content in the expanded master, but no
the headers/footers

Because the master overrides the sub-documents settings. There is also
nothing you can do about it.

Would it help if I mentioned I am running Word 2000 on an XP
Professional machine?

But if the master overrides the subs' settings, shouldn't a change t
the master automatically be reflected in the sub docs? This is exactl
what ISN'T occuring. Changes I make to the master's header only appea
to take effect in the subs when they are expanded in the master doc
When I later open the subs individually, they contain the old header.

Actually, after reading through your page on master documents (the Te
Rules), I am inclined to stay the hell away from making any changes t
the subs via the master. I've already run into trouble once when
tried deleting some of those annoying section breaks and wandered int
what felt like quicksand. Luckily I am using VSS, so I just 'undid' m
checkout, gladly loosing all of my changes

No, it overrides, not OVERWRITES. It completely IGNORES the H&F in the
subs. They are irrelevant. If set so, it completely ignores the style
definitions in the subs. They are irrelevant. You can edit a style
from the master and it won't affect the subs themselves. This is
usually desirable.
