I'm looking for some samples of master documents (w/sub-documents).
Preferably some that have TOC's in them.

Actually, not many people use master documents, since they tend to corrupt;
see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm.

As an alternative, you can use INCLUDETEXT fields. For more, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/tblsfldsfms/includetextfieldscontent.htm.

Or see this article:

Creating a Table of Contents Spanning Multiple Documents
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=148

But note that Word handles large files well, assuming that there is enough
of RAM available.
