Master Document page limit?

Is there a limit on the number of pages you can stuff into a Master/subdoc?
I have 2400 page doc (and it is still growing) and Word is starting to groan.

Is there a way to correctly update the TOC without expanding all the subdocs?

Any thoughts on splitting this into 2 master docs and then how would I
manage a correct TOC?

Thanks

Thanks for the insight, yes, I did read that (it did not instill confidence
in me :( with regard to using word). What I need is pretty simple - software
that can handle 3000-4000 page docs with pictures in them, Word is what they
gave me, so I am trying to "pound to fit, paint to match"

Any miracles up your sleeve? I was hoping it was something that could be
done, if I just knew how.

Many users report working on text documents up to 10,000 pages in a single
file without problems; adding pictures would undoubtedly be a problem,
however.

And are they doing this with Master/subdocs? Anything special or just plain
old word?

Do you think it would buy me anything if I linked my pictures instead of
putting them in the doc?

Thanks for your help/insight

As I said, "in a single file." Linking the pictures will definitely reduce
file size, but it makes the document less portable.
