Massive fonts

I have a look inside the /windows/fonts last night, but apart from
clicking to see a couple, I do nothing.
This morning I start my machine and all of a sudden I have massive
default fonts. The font itself has changed from serif to sans-serif,
certain programs are totally unusable and all the advice I can find on
the net is to reinstall.
Is that really the only option ?

I have googled.
I have found the "Run Setup" solution but as I'm on a laptop where the
only option is to restore an image, that will not work.
I have tried copying out all the fonts, deleting the registry key,
retarting, importing fonts. That does not work.

I am amazed that something as simple as a font can render a machine
unusable, and that the only solution I can find is to reinstall the
complete OS.

Thankfully I use this daily, so a roll-back has worked.

Linux just has to be the answer though.
