Marking the follow up complete

I have a custom form with a page for follow up. Is there a way to mark a
follow up complete without using the flag tool button?

I have a textbox for date completed. I would like to automatically mark the
follow up complete or at least provide a check box on the form similar to the
"Flag for Follow Up" dialog box.

I did read in another post that this dialog box was private. Does this mean
"mark complete" is not accessible either?

You didn't say what type of form it is (message or contact). It matters.
