Marking Items as read with autopreview and no reading pane

I have a user who is having a problem with marking items as read in
Outlook 2003/exhange server enviroment. He doesn't use the reading pane
and only uses auto preview. Marking Items as read after 3 seconds or
when the selection change only appears to work if you use the reading
pane. Any idea's on this? I've searched far and wide and can't seem to
find out if this is even possible. Thanks =)

What happens if the user uses the option to mark as read when the selection
changes?

It doesn't mark them as read just keeps them as unread. It appears the
only way to make them unread, is open it, right click and select unread
or ctrl+q. Its very strange, I'm beginning to think this might just be
the way outlook is support to function.
