Mapping a Keyboard Character

In Vista, is it possible to map a character to a key? For example, on MS2000
or XP, I would set Alt+X to give me a Wingdings tick. Doesn't seem possible
on Vista, but it might be me...

I keep a text file that contains some of the odd characters I tend to
use. I just open the file highlight what I want and then copy and past. It
was a lot easier in XP where As-U Type worked and I could handle a lot
quicker. Here is my set. © ® ½ ¼ € ? £ ¢ º ² ³ ¾

I am not sure why the topic switched from mapping a char to a shortcut, I
believe, to perusing unusual characters.

You may consider an API in Windows\system32\ It is charmap.exe. It has all
characters in Unicode and otherwise except for Chinese and Japanese chars.
It has a lot of stuff: Cyrillic, Arabic, you name it.

You might be interested in the way I do this. I use a little freeware
background program called AllChars. This lets me type many common
special characters (many of these are used in other languages) by
pressing the ctrl key followed by a two character mnemonic
combination.

For example, for ñ the two characters are ~ and n. For ç it's c and ,
For ü it's u and ". For ½ it's 1 and 2. For © it's c and o, for € it's
E and =, and so on.

If you need a handful of such chars you may use charmap.exe. However, If you
type long texts in other languages, it is a different story.

Also there is a way to switch from English keyboard to Spanish or French (or
many other languages for this matter) with a shortcut key.
