Mapped Drive Keeps Asking For Password

Kory

I have mapped a drive to a server that has full access to
everyone share but when I reboot my Win2k machine it
always asks for the password which is nothing and I just
have to press enter to bypass. Does anyone know how to
avoid the password prompt?

Thanks, Kory

Your password is blank on your system and the account used on the server,
that has rights to the share is a global user and you're logging in to your
workstation as that global user?

On my workstation I am logged in on the administrator
account that does have a password and the server has a
account setup with no password.

If you aren't logging into a domain, make sure that the account/password you
want to use exists identically on the server. I don't recommend blank
passwords, btw....

That doesn't answer my question, although agreed it was multipart. So,
let's start with this.

Workstation:
Username: domain\administrator or computername\administrator

Server:
Username: domain\administrator or domain\someotherlogonname

It appears you are logging into the local domain (computername) and not into
the global domain using the local administrator account which has a
password. Then when you try to access the server, you get a prompt for
password and even though it is blank, you have to press ENTER.

Why? Because that is exactly what it is supposed to do.

The server sees your username as computername\administrator which IS NOT
domain\administrator. If you logged into the workstation as
domain\administrator, you would not be prompted for a password when you
connect to the server.

Another possible solution, which I DO NOT RECOMMEND, is to set the passwords
the same. Even though the logon is different it will attempt to use the
same password and will prompt you to provide it if they do not match, as it
is doing now.

1. As Lanwench suggested, DO NOT use a blank password for an Admin or any
other account.
2. Set the passwords for the two accounts to be separate passwords.
3. If you want to have access from the workstation to the server, without
being prompted to provide a password, logon to the workstation with the
domain\administrator's account.

Another tidbit... You should only use an admin account when doing
administration otherwise you should be using a normal user account, like
everyone else.

HTH...
