Mapi32.dll not valid or damaged

After upgrading an Office 11 installation to an Office 12 Outlook did not
respond anymore. Outlook 2007 does not work with Exchange 5.5 Therefore i had
to remove Outlook 2007 and reinstall Outlook 2003. This did not work because
the message mapi32.dll is not the right version or damaged. Removed the
Office 2007 installation and reinstalled Office 2003 but the problem still
exists. Removed all mapi32 files and made a new install but the same message
appears. Outlook 2003 is still not working. What can I do??

A bit late, but i had the same problem and your message was my first hit in
Google. So for any new users with this problem ... I got this error after
uninstalling Office2007 (I'm not ready for 2007 yet) and installing
Office2003, and starting Outlook 2003.

The solution was:
- search your \windows and \program files folders for MAPI32.DLL and
MSMAPI32.DLL. Rename any files found and start Outlook again. Now Outlook
will start a setup procedure to replace the missing files. You may need your
Office2003 CD, I still had the files on disk (\config.msi). After starting
Outlook there's a message about a problem and if Outlook should fix it.
'Yes' and the error was gone.

All you needed to do was to rename msmapi32.dll to .old and then restart Outlook. That is the problem child.
