map dirve over site-to-site vpn using hardware routers ?

hi,

when u map a drive over a vpn established using a couple of routers (as
opposed to ms servers) how do the routers deal with autheticating users on
the domain ?

i.e are users just prompted for user + pass each time they attempt to
examine the drive ?

i.e do users login over the vpn connection in the first place so domain
controller is remote for one site ?

the network they connected too ?
