Many entries in Task Manager

M

ms

I have a custom computer built locally.

On another machine, I still remember W98SE, I had 5 entries in Task
Manager, when online I had 9 processes running. It was very easy to
detect problems.

But my W2K install has about 40 running processes.

I know some of them are my installs, some are motherboard utils, video
card utils that were installed when the computer was assembled.

My use is a home machine, one user as Administrator, no network or LAN.

I tend to run a minimalist system. Still learning W2K, so many processes
are new to me..

I would like to reduce the total, so I can more easily detect problems.

Based upon my usage, what are the typical OS processes that can safely be
disabled?

Or, is there a URL to describe W2K processes so I can make a informed
choice?

TIA

Unless you have some compelling reason it's best to leave the services up to
the operating system. If you must experiment then always be prepared to
reinstall the operating system.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=263201 for win default processes
However there is no such thing as 'typical'
I've just checked my Task Mngr, shows 80 processes of which 9 are startup
apps, it makes no difference to performance or problem solving (1gb ram on a
no great shakes cpu)
Your A/V and Firewall app could have 8+ proccesses associated
Apps that run on startup will show, these may well have an option to be set
not to auto run on startup.
If you search for the file name shown in task mngr, the properties of same
will maybe give an indication.
A number of processes will be services, (Control Panel>Administrative
Tools>Services)
http://www.ss64.com/ntsyntax/services.html I know its xp, win2k broadly the
same
Basically do NOT disable any service unless you are clear as to the
consequences

Lastly a winnt based sys is entirely different to win9* so dont compare the
task mngr items

| Good advice. I'll have to learn more about each entry in Task Manager.

| Thanks

Thanks, good info.

That link might be very useful, but I got:
"The Requested Web Page is Not Available"

A better URL?

MS
I use a freeware program called PRC Viewer to look at programs and
processes running on various versions of Windows. It gives you path as
well as program name so you can figure out most of the various things
are that are running.
