This is a very basic question, so this seems like the
right group for it. I am currently the administrator of
a network that does not contain any Windows servers.
This is not due to any ridiculous prejudices or anything,
and in fact is about to change. However, having
supported a competitor's product for some time, I am used
to a certain way of doing things.

I'm having difficulty finding what I would
consider "user's manual" type information in MS support.
To put forth a hypothetical, suppose I wish to know how
to join my XP machine to a Win2k domain (something I
already know how to do, so it's a good example). I go to
support.microsoft.com, product support, choose XP, choose
Step-by-Step Instructions & How To Articles, choose How
to Set Up Your Network in Windows XP, and there is no
pertinent article ("Step 1: ... Step 2: ..."). I've been
reading extensively, taking approved MSCE courses, will
probably be certified w/in the month, not having any
trouble with the material or learning how to
install/maintain/manage the servers or desktops, but I
just see a real lack in terms of documentation, and it
makes me think that I'm missing something. It would be
nice to be able to choose "Manuals" and enter a text
string ("join a domain") and get *just* the instructions,
not the 8,436 articles about what to do when something
goes wrong in your mixed MS/Linux environment with Mac OS
8 clients in the art department...

Am I missing something?

Tony,

The Resource Kits contain good information as a single source. Also the
system help files are useful. For example, in Windows XP going to Help and
Support and searching for "join domain."

Thanks, Ken. That's what I've been doing, in general. I
just seem to wind up with a lot of returns (not on a
basic example like I gave, so much) that are very
specific to odd environments. However, I've been taking
a lot of heat for (apparently) not being a good member of
the community, here, so I'll try to address this in other
ways.
