Manually Started Defragment Stops in Sleep Mode

A manually started Windows Vista Defragment appears to stop before completing
its job if the computer enters sleep mode. I've read that Vista Defrag was
designed to be low disk and low cpu priority, but why would defrag let the
computer go to sleep on it? Isn't defrag SUPPOSED to run when you're not
using the computer? And shouldn't Vista be smart enough to postpone sleep
mode if something like defrag is running or is there something I can
configure (besides making the delay for sleep mode longer) that would solve
this problem?
