Managing Layers in Powerpoint 2007

Using Office 2007, specifically PowerPoint on Windows XP. We're trying to
manage layers of 'text', 'shapes', and 'boxes of patterns' on a Powerpoint
slide. We do not have Photoshop but how do you 'compress' all the shapes into
one? Many layers compress into one layer? You know, once you get all the
'text', 'shapes', and 'boxes of patterns' just the way you like it, you want
to totally make it a background. Or better yet, you simply want to 'lock' the
collage of 'text', 'shapes', and 'boxes of patterns' and work over it. Nope,
we're not trying to create art but just a 'common' theme in our information
slides that build starting with the background, for lack of a better word,
'collage'. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance for your
response(s)!

Select them all and press Ctrl+G, which is a shortcut for Group. You can
also find Group on the Home tab in the Arrange group.
