I've managed to fix my power off and reboot problem.

Others have said they're having the same problem.

If you've got a Via Sata Raid controller, download the Via Raid 530c drivers
from somewhere like

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/Other-DRIVERS-TOOLS/Others/VIA-RAID-530c.shtml

Right click on the downloaded file and select `Extract all`

Go into the extracted directory and right click on SETUP and run as
administrator.

Click on allow to whatever messages appear. Then the PC will want to reboot.
This will hang as usual.

Once you've re-set your PC and booted it, go into `Device Drivers` `Storage
Controllers` `Via SATA Raid controller` and click on the driver tab. Click on
`Update Driver`

then `Browse my computer for Driver software`

then `Let me pick a list of device drivers on my computer`

then `have disk`

Browse to `Wherever you extracted your 5.30 drivers to`\drvdisk\AMD64\2003x64

and select VIAMRX64

Click on Next etc to install this, your PC will then want to reboot. I cant
remember whether it rebooted fine at this point or not. But once it's
rebooted, it finds a new device, installs automatically and now my PC reboots
and powers off fine.

Note, if you don't follow the above instructions to manually pick the
driver, it tells you (well it told me) that a suitable driver was already
installed.

Hope this helps

Phil

I followed your procedure for x86 and it works to.

Thanks a lot.

Phil, Thanks I manually installed the older Raid Controller inf. and now all
is well again.

How did you get it to work on X86. i cant install the driver. It says i need
to use a driver built for the 32 bit system..

X86 is the 32-bit edition of Vista. It is an arcane numbering system that
harkens back to the halcyon days of Motorola CPU model numbers.

So, Dove, if you are getting a message that says you need to use a driver
built for a 32-bit system, perhaps you have inadvertently tried to install a
driver that was built for a 64-bit system.

Installing VIA VT8237 Driver 5.30c fixed the problem.
Thanks Phil. Make sure that Microsoft hear this, as this is a new issue,
previous releases worked fine.
Also I noticed that with this driver my PC is loading much faster than
before, but the Rating for the HD still the same: 5,2 (I ran the assesment
tool again of course...)

So someone is going to have to provide a fix or instructions to correct this
problem on other systems. I'm not a geek, so I am not able to follow the
instructions posted especially since they reference AMD64. I don't have a
AMD64, but I'm sure there are some smart people here at MS that can help me
fix the same problem.

I didn't have this problem with Beta2, RC1 (both public releases) but now
with RC2 their is a problem. So what changed?

I love this new OS, but I can't believe something like this can creap into a
build so close to production.

Yes I'm venting, but I'd really like to fix this problem, but my similar
post here at this forum has netted nothing.

SOS, I'd love some help.

thanks for listening,
Greg

I have the same problem, however I have a board that does NOT have a VIA chip
nor RAID or SATA controllers on it.
It's an ASUS A7A266 using the 1013 BIOS (Latest there is) and it has the ALI
MAGIK chipset.
Works perfectly under XP, but in any build of Vista it won't restart or shut
all the way down. Logs off, shuts Windows down, video goes orange, but
whatever tells the power supply to shut off doesn't happen. Restart does the
same thing.

In addition, I have this BIOS set to start the PC by hitting Spacebar. This
worked flawlessly under XP, but no longer works in Vista.
Seems like something in Vista doesn't like something in this BIOS...
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

i instaled the driver for 32 bit from the folder NT5 and now windows
