Posting the *exact* error message would have been helpful :)

Anyway, follow the below mentioned suggestions and let us know how the
results.

1.CCleaner - Free
Cleans temporary internet files, cookies, history, recent urls, application
MRUs, etc. ...
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
If Windows Defender is utilized go to Applications, under Utilities
uncheck "Windows Defender" (so it won't delete the history of WD)

2.SuperAntispyware - Free

3.Malwarebytes© Corporation - Anti-Malware

Kaspersky's AVPTool

There's no updating involved since the scanning engine is updated
several times a day and you simply download the updated scanner whenever
you want to do a scan.

After the software is updated, it is suggested scanning the system in Safe
Mode.

Now I'm impressed. That's an Online/On-demand Scanner.

Microsoft could take some lessons from this one, and provide some much
needed maintenance to their OneCare Safety Scanner, which they've slept on
since 2006. There were a few things that bothered me... an attempt to
auto-start this on-demand scanner, and trying to add an automatic mode
system service (alerted on is-IA9T8 by Defender), still it's impressive. I
had wondered about Kaspersky's detect only online scan strategy.. this
utility fills that gap.

Thanks for the link, Kayman. It's added to my toolkit.

YW :)

Many experts suggest that Windows Live One Care is on the bottom of the
list as far as finding virus\malware\trojan. There are better (free)
applications and utilities availabe. Let me know if you're interested.

Those experts, I suspect, are out of date. OneCare, as I understand it, is
now testing with the best in independent lab tests.

Thanks, Engel. A good resource to recommend with the scanner download.
This is the first I've heard of this tool, as I had the old detect-only
scanner bookmarked, it must be getting a lot of play in the HJT forums.

Well, as soon as the test reports are released, I suspect, various resident
experts will comment and if warranted alter their stance more positivly
towards OneCare. I am eagerly awaiting their postings in this and other
newsgroups.
IMO, considering OneCare is Pay Ware, it would have to improve
*significantly* compared to the *free* versions of AntiVir, Avast and AVG,
notwithstanding the unneeded additions it holds.

It would be wrong not to mention the *Mother* of *all* On-Demand AV
scanning utilities as well:-

David H. Lipman's MULTI_AV.EXE can be downloaded from the URL:
http://www.pctipp.ch/ds/28400/28470/Multi_AV.exe
http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp
English:
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/09/scan-your-computer-with-multiple-anti-virus-for-free/

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe {Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS}
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to
go through your FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor
related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- {or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in
Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web
site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and
Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files
or you can download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you
have downloaded the files needed for each scanner you want to use, you
should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key during boot] and re-run the
menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal
Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more
comprehensive PDF help file.

just did some googling and saw this about the tool

The Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool is a free application was designed to be
another virus scanner and detection software from Kaspersky. The product
will scan the specified locations for any virus threats and remove them or
send to Quarantine folder.

Also, to uninstall/move this program "enable self-defense' must be
unchecked.

OneCare is payware, but the scanner at safety.live.com is free, and uses the
same definition sets, I believe.

(I tend to agree about the "unneeded additions...")
