Hi,

A Recent update (890830) installs a tool in your WinXP, to remove malicious
software from your system (a sort of spyware removal tool)
The tools comes automatcily with the windows updates, so far so good.
I've been searching the net a few hours now and there's lots of info on that
tools, What is does, what is removes, how good it is, wich params you can
give, etc, etc...
The only thing that is not mentioned in the hundereds of pages is how to
start the program !!!

Does anyone know how to start this program ?

Thanks,
Jo

It started right after download. When finished, the executable file
(MRT.EXE) has been removed and you should find the log file MRT.LOG
in %windir%\Debug.
Does anyone know how to start this program ?

In order to start that tool again, you may want to download and run
that package: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=40587

Me too!

What silly billies they are!

When using Windows Updates or Automatic Updates, it will automatically
run and you will not get any feedback whatsoever, it runs in quiet mode
and then it just deletes itself.

After it is finished, it writes the result to a log file.

To see the log file, run the following command from Start/Run:

notepad %windir%\Debug\Mrt.log

Is there any particular reason you didn't read the explanation
offered by the Windows Update site?

If that wasn't enough of an explanation for you, you need to read
the KB Article that describes the use of this tool. The tool is updated
the second Tuesday of each month, appears as a "Critical Update" on the
Windows Update site, and runs only when "downloaded." Nothing is
installed; there's nothing to run at a later date; there's nothing to
ever uninstall.

The program is a completely "load, run, and exit" item that only
leaves behind a log file, as mentioned in the other responses.

It is my understanding that this will be a recurring item on the
Windows Update site, probably monthly, and it will be targeted each
month at the most common items of malicious software being encountered
by Microsoft Product Support.

When you read the MS site about this it says you have to sign a EULA.
Mine downloaded automatically and this was not the case. How do you
know what the tool found?

Open the %windir%\Debug\MRT.LOG file with Notepad. If no malicious
software has been found, it reads like this:

Removal Tool Results:
No infection found.
