"Malicious Software Removal Tool"

Checking for updates to Windows XP Home, I find MS posted this, "Malicious
Software Removal Tool" as a critical update, today. Is this the new beta
version of antispyware/viruses, etc. that MS is now offering, or is it
something different?

I'll wait a while before putting a beta program on my machine but maybe this
isn't it.

Once installed does this "Malicious Software Removal Tool" stay resident in
memory and shield the computer or is it a stand alone program that one runs
on occasion or just where does it go and how is it implemented?

From searching MSN it looks like a simple one-time program that only looks
for about 6 or 8 problems. I suspect much better coverage is available with
and antivirus program coupled with Spybot, AdAware, and CWShredder.

What are the thoughts on this?

I really don't think there is a problem installing this program. Indead you
are right. Keep all you other programs installed and running.

It will be a regular update on each month's Windows Update
Tuesday. Seems to be designed for users without any Anti-Virus
protection. I believe the final Microsoft Anti-Virus product will be
called "Titan" and this is only a piece of it.

It is a lot like Blaster, it just does a few tasks. It says
that you keep your current a/v program.

From 890830: "Note that the tool is not actually installed on a computer.
Therefore, no entry is created for it in the Programs folder or in
Add/Remove Programs."

Well, I am not going to download it and click on "install" anyway.

It installs differently depending on whether you get it from
WU or downloads..

No, this is different software. The spyware checker is no beta
software.
Once installed does this "Malicious Software Removal Tool" stay resident in
memory and shield the computer or is it a stand alone program that one runs

The program installs via WU, runs and then deinstalls automatically.
There is also an online version available at www.microsoft.com, which
you can use if you do not want to run the tool via WU.
From searching MSN it looks like a simple one-time program that only looks
for about 6 or 8 problems. I suspect much better coverage is available with
and antivirus program coupled with Spybot, AdAware, and CWShredder.

It is no replacement for a good virus scanner and spyware checker. The
tool is (for the moment only) for to remove some of the spyware which
has been widely spread around in the past.
