Malicious code causing pop-ups

On doing a google search the other day, I ended up on a
site (can't remember which - as I backtracked immediately
when something started to download). Something managed to
download.

Whatever did download now fires up spam pop-ups throughout
the day (I am 24 x 7 DSL connected, with up-to-date
firewall in place) - which is MEGA annoying.

Does anyone know what this is likely to be and how I can
ge rid of it? I did a full re-install of IE 6.0, and this
has not rectified the problem.

Many thanks to one and all for any help.

Hi Hamish

Start cleaning your Windows using AdAware (www.lavasoft.de) and/or Spybot Search&Destroy (security.kolla.de) to get rid of the adware

Hello, you should also make sure no unnecessary plugins were installed.
Freeware utility from SoftInterop (www.softinterop.com) 'Unextension' allows
to remove any Internet and Windows Explorer plugins. It has undo command, so
you can experiment safely.

Dear Alex and Hans

Many thanks for the pointers - I have done as you both
suggest, and I hope that this solves the problem.

Have a great festive season, and many, many thanks again.
